I AM MEHER BOKHARI, HEAR ME YELL (About Things I Don’t Really Know Much About)

November 26, 2010

Do you guys know who MEHER BOKHARI is? In case you don’t, MEHER BOKHARI is an anchor on Samaa where she hosts a political talk show called News Beat. The defining feature of the show is her penchant for yelling. There really isn’t much more. So if you tune into Samaa when her show is on you’ll get an earful of MEHER BOKHARI yelling about the latest political controversy in the country. Sometimes with a child in her arms. Oh, she knows her drama.

Recently MEHER BOKHARI had Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer on her show to discuss the Aasia Bibi blasphemy case, and in particular his effort towards getting her pardoned by the President.

And MEHER BOKHARI was having none of it. Our feelings have been hurt. We demand blood. Here are some choice moments from the show:

As part of the opening monologue MEHER BOKHARI says:

“…and upon proving the occurrence of the crime the district judge handed down the death sentence to Aasia Bibi.”

Yes. Once the crime was proven. This obviously had nothing to do with the baying mob demanding that Aasia Bibi be hanged, and everything to do with proof. After all, the word of a Muslim is likely to be more valid than that of a Christian lady.

Angered by the Governor going directly to the President for clemency MEHER BOKHARI says:

“Aasia Bibi still had two forums where she could have appealed. The High Court and the Supreme Court. Why go directly to the President?”

Let her languish in prison for a crime she may not have committed and where she may be killed like previous people accused of blasphemy. Mercy isn’t something we should show without due process.

How dare the Governor put all of us at risk, she asks:

“Because of your actions, security at mosques and churches has had to be bumped up.”

Greater security at mosques and churches? What a horrific idea! It’s not like they’ve been attacked before.

But you declared Ahmadis Non-Muslims Governor:

“The founder of your party passed a law in the 1970s that declared Ahmadis Non-Muslims. What is your opinion of this law?”

Two wrongs! They DO make a right!

Certainly the Governor can have no response to the overwhelming evidence against Aasia Bibi:

“So, in your opinion, Governor, the  confession given to the Panchaayat was false, the one and a half year long trial was wrong, the verdict was wrong, and the police investigation was inaccurate?”

I certainly have never heard of instances where a vocal group of extreme people has been able to force our courts and police to do their bidding. I’m going to assume MEHER BOKHARI hasn’t either. We both hate Wikipedia.

But Governor, she asks, what about us:

“Governor Sahib, shouldn’t humanity also be extended towards those whose feelings have been hurt? Of the Muslims?”

Life of a Christian woman is roughly equal to making me cry.

It’s all about being human though, she exclaims:

“But what’s the alternative Governor? Should we just allow a lynching of alleged blasphemers? Shouldn’t there be a state punishment to avoid such incidents?”

Let the state kill them. It’s SO much better than getting our own hands dirty.

You dumb fucking liberal extremists:

“These West worshipping or liberal individuals, or mentality, it often forces this debate, which then makes the country look bad.”

How dare anyone force us to look at our laws and have a debate on them? Only bad things come from debate. That’s why MEHER BOKHARI’s show is a bastion of rhetoric and bombast.

Debate. Nuance. Sab gunah.

How dare you call MEHER BOKHARI Western?

“I am not Western.”

But I do like their clothes:

“The Blasphemy law was created in 1992. This is not Zia-ul-Haq’s creation.”

‘Between 1988 and 2005, Pakistani authorities charged 647 people with offences under the blasphemy laws.’

Like I said, we hate Wikipedia.

By the way, Governor, the Ulema are pissed off:

“The Ulema have issued a fatwa against you saying that you are no longer a Muslim.”

A bunch of Ulema with an ideological agenda to defend the Blasphemy laws have declared you a Non-Muslim, Governor. Isn’t that surprising?

“According to the Constitution, a ‘Munafiq’ cannot hold a high ranking government position.”

Not only has the Fatwa from some Ulema been issued, but it is also the truth. You must resign immediately. MEHER BOKHARI caught you out Gov. You must go now.

Also, Governor, you just destroyed everything:

“Do you feel like your steps are fanning the flames of religious hatred?”

A Muslim man reaching out to help a Christian woman is the height of religious intolerance. We must all protest this wildly and set fire to a couple of fast food establishments.

And now MEHER BOKHARI reads a memo:

“There is a restricted and confidential notification of the Punjab government, which explicitly says this information should not be circulated.”

But I am MEHER BOKHARI and I will fucking read this live on national television.

as far as i know, capital punishment can only be pardoned by the President of Pakistan(AAZ) so what’s the point of going to HC or SC.

Ms. Bokhari is quite a site … as long as she does not open her pretty mouth. Or for that matter, she will continue to be a sight if she continues to wear ‘maghrib nawaz’ clothes.

And that cringing baby in hand stunt, I saw that. Had I been that baby, I would have tried to drown that woman right there.

        Assalaamu ‘Alaikum all,
“Mullah’s ‘force’ people to do what they believe. Slight difference, I think?”
Imams “force” people to do what was believed by Apostle of Allaah(may Allaah bless Him and grant Him peace) and His Companions(may Allaah be pleased with them all) including Caliph Umar(may Allaah be pleased with Him). They forfeit their right to be respected, obeyed and followed if they repeal Law of Allaah and His Apostle(may Allaah bless Him and grant Him peace) .Their perseverance in the adherence to Beliefs of Apostle of Allaah(may Allaah bless Him and grant Him peace) and His Companions(may Allaah be pleased with them all) deserves to be respected and owes them a right to be followed just like anybody else who adheres to the Beliefs of Apostle of Allaah(may Allaah bless Him and grant Him peace) and His Companions(may Allaah be pleased with them all). The self-isolation of educated Muslims from Imams due to our own inferiority complex would only lead to cognitive dissonance for us.Focusing on the primacy of the Beliefs of Apostle of Allaah(may Allaah bless Him and grant Him peace) and His Companions(may Allaah be pleased with them all) will be more conducive to a fruitful discussion. May Allaah guide us all to the Way of His Love and His Pleasure.

there are two rather disturbing trends on display here which were a primary reason for my disenchantment with journalism.

for starters, i know members of my family who like meher primarily because she, in their opinion, grills people better than someone like jasmine. what i came to realise after two years in the media was that this is not an isolated position. our audiences view these programs as a source of catharsis, where they vicariously enjoy the anchor’s ability to pin a powerful person down and make them uncomfortable.

what this also means is that the content of the program makes little effect on them – they are likely to agree with the opinions they already hold, and disagree with the ones they don’t. the spectacle on display is then no longer a question of investigating a story or something, but rather a contest to see who can come out on top. and the anchors know this, because the hyperventilation is akin to a wolf pissing against a tree – they are marking their territory.

the second thing that depresses me is that journalists can allow themselves to be so utterly divorced from their own sense of moralities. i mean meher bokhari, from the little i know of her, is not a bloody baying blasphemy-prosecutor. yet she takes on that personna so readily, and continues to feed into the bloodlust held by so many. and this is what all journos feel they have the god-given right to do – to bring everyone to line and hold them up for whatever morals they feel like, when it is patently clear that they don’t embrace the same values in their own life.

if a journalist can honestly question morals on the basis of the beliefs they themselves hold and try and stay true to, the profession lives up to its noble potential.

    Karachikhatmal

Media and Honesty LOL its a million dollar business my dear and in business code of ethics are only for your opponents their AIM is high TRPs means profit by getting more ADs.
They make stories and sell them this is their business.

    • November 26, 2010 6:56 pm

      ijay mian

no valid TRPs exist in pakistan. of course the money helps, but its not just about that. the anchors feel this savior/hero complex which they can’t think outside of.

      • jaferii permalink
        November 27, 2010 7:07 am

valid or accurate TRP’s may not exist, but TRP’s do exist. they are followed and monitored. they reflect what the media feels people want to see, and the media feels that people want to see anything as long as it is conservative.

many anchors do have a hero complex, but they can very much think outside of it. when they do, they think about what they feel will effect their TRP’s.

Sethi is brilliant. his ratings are relatively mediocre. Doctor Danish is mediocre. His ratings are brilliant.

@karachikhatmal: i completely agree with your first comment though. spot on.

      • November 27, 2010 11:17 am

After Reading latest Barkha Dutt story u still believe on saviors
LOL bhai mere even 1 news ticker kay bhe pesay hotay hain
YOu have no idea! Unfortunately its not your fault limited knowledge
about media games is responsible for this ignorance

      • November 27, 2010 1:47 pm

I don’t think anyone in the comments section has alluded to actually believing that the media vallahs are in fact our savior. The reference has been towards a messiah complex within popular talk show hosts which forces them to adopt a moral structure while presenting their shows which may or may not be reflective of their actual beliefs.

I have to say that I agree with KarachiKhatmal on this point. While the aspect of money cannot possibly be discounted (after all, if a firebrand right winger’s television show was making no money, it too would be cancelled), I believe that many talk show anchors have come to believe that they have a much larger ability to affect public thinking than they actually do. This is proven time and time again when candidates that they belittle in the run-up to by-elections end up winning their seats (Jamshed Dasti being a prime example). However, this has not stopped them from continuing in the belief that they are the defenders of our moral boundaries and that they know better than others.

But IJQureshi, your point regarding the opacity of media dealings is also fair. Thankfully we have blogs like Cafe Pyala which at least allow us some glimpse into that world.

Meher Bokhari with Amarican Black Boy

    • November 28, 2010 12:11 pm

I’m pretty sure there’s no proof at all that the individual you’re referring to is actually a CIA agent. You usually don’t carry that information around on business cards.

I also don’t think what she’s doing here should be classified as ‘besharam’. I don’t really believe in dragging one’s private life out in public – Ms. Bokhari provided plenty of ammunition through her statements and arguments on the show itself.

“Yikes, she posed with a black guy…Imran Khan will feel really bad about this picture”

I’m fairly certain that the above statement is more a reference to Imran Khan’s infamous “yeh to afreeki lagta hai” outburst and isn’t meant to be racist, so I’ll let it slide.

      • December 3, 2010 11:32 am

I wish people’d stick to her knowledge concerning politics/her TV-anchor skills (or lack thereof) and stay away from her private life. That’s not the point of this post, in my opinion. Good job, KK.

  14. November 29, 2010 7:54 am

Well well well, that’s how you show your jealousy towards a rising anchor person, i watched that show of Salman Taseer completely, and i guess she put both sides of the arguments well, that’s what her job is, and yes Mr. Taseer evaded the difficult question that actually this whole episode of blasphemy was indeed initiated by ZAB and yes i agree with her effort of putting questions that Mr. Taseer just tried to be popular with his stint of pardoning when the case is pending in court, and yes i am not PMLN, JI apologist either 🙂 oh yes last but not least, she doesn’t yell while anchoring but she knows how to control the guests so that events like PTI / PPP wwf don’t occur which happened recently.

    • November 29, 2010 2:22 pm

Yes, jealousy. No other logical explanation exists to criticize anyone anymore.

And if you think she doesn’t yell while hosting her show you really haven’t seen enough of it.

  15. December 2, 2010 2:56 pm

The other aspect of talkshow hosts like MB choosing to take the line that they do may also be based on the fact that its less scary to try and corner someone taking a civilized position than someone taking a barbaric one. Can you imagine her daring to speak in such a manner or question in such a manner one of the hardcore maulvis issuing death sentences? She would be too terrified to do it. So, what is needed is drama and aggression, but its better to take it out on someone who one is relatively confident will respond in a [relatively] civilized fashion.

Bro, I think she was being devils advocate, I saw the program and the questions she posed was what you hear when you talk about repealing them. I think you got to distracted by the yelling to notice that she was sympathetic towards Aasia bibi’s plight but you gotta have answers ready for the questions she posed in order to get the moronic middle cum drawing room class on your side.

    • December 4, 2010 3:12 pm
